It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like........Normal!!!

Generally when the word "normal" is used to describe our family (or probably most people's families) it is followed by a muffled chuckle and a roll of the eyes. But here we are, it's 2008 and the holidays have passed us by once more.

We had an amazing holiday this year. We didn't go overboard (like we have a choice), we didn't increase our debts.....AT ALL, and the kids were so awesome. We had a really amazing time spending the night at Papa Bear and Grandmama's house. If it weren't for the darn roosters, I might say we would do it again soon. It is so much fun watching my kids and their cousins have the time to bond and be silly. And I had just as much fun staying up late with everyone and just relaxing and chatting.

And what could be more fun than Christmas morning! It started out with great excitement as my clumsy butt fell right down the stairs in my rush to beat everyone to get that magical morning picture, but only managed to terrify the kids who just cried thinking I must have died. Once we were safely on ground level, the festivites began. Each present was met with, "he really did know!" and just pure amazement.

This year I struggled a little bit with the idea of Santa. Don't get me wrong.....I LOVE the idea of Santa. But I think I failed a bit this year in expressing the true magic of Christmas which should be celebrated as the birth of Jesus Christ. Of course, we mentioned it. The kids know. But I somehow failed to give it the attention and time it really deserved. It is so easy for me to allow myself and the kids to get caught up in the ribbons and bows, lights and music, Baileys and Coffee. Rex and I have different histories in regards to the Santa experience. I found out about Santa at a young age (maybe 6), Rex was about 30. Just kidding!! He was maybe 12. The fantasy of Santa is HUGE for him and he wants it to last as long as possible. I am not real sure just yet. I think next year we will have to think a little more and make a little more effort to incorporate Jesus into our holidays and the spirit of giving that it represents without becoming Scrooges of course. This year I made the mistake of using Santa as a means of doing what I say. If Santa really can be looked at as someone who encapsulates the spirit of Jesus, then doing this sends a very wrong message. Do I use Jesus to get my kids to eat their green beans or stop whining? Of course not. As is the case with Jesus, our love for him leads us to want to please him and obey his word. At the same time, our love for this jolly man named Santa, should also lead us to do the same. Not for fear of a stocking full of coal. In that lesson you lose the most powerful message of grace and forgiveness.

I didn't really mean to go on and on about that! I am really looking forward to what this year has to offer. Maryn will be starting Kindergarten in '08! It is hard to imagine. Incidentally, she rolled her eyes at something daddy said this morning. Here we go!!! Dylan is doing so great! He begins speech therapy next week and is looking forward to pre-K so he can be big and go on field trips like his sister. He is the sweetest thing! He has his dad's love language of touch. It doesn't matter what he is doing, he will find some way to touch you. I love that. He holds my hand when we sit together, hugs my leg when we are standing somewhere. I generally have to wiggle my fingers away from him if I am trying to do something. I usually don't want to because there is such a sweetness in the feel of your babies holding on to you, but if I didn't he would be attached to me 24/7.

Anyway, I hope and pray for a happy and healthy 2008 for all of us!

Photos From Trip to Disney World

We took the kids to Disney World (first time). My (Rex's) best friend, Mike, and his son, Dominic, had a nice place to stay and invited us down, so we took advantage of the free lodging!

The kids had a blast... it was a quick trip - 2 days at Disney - but was well worth the trip!

Fun in Gatlinburg, TN

We went to stay a night in Gatlinburg to ride the Trolley and see their Christmas lights. Their Christmas lights were pretty much unimpressive for the hype... Maryn was asking to get off the "bus" just 15 minutes into the hour ride.

We at least has fun earlier in the day riding the tram to Ober Gatlinburg. Then once we were there, we rode the ski lift to the very top and then again to ride the alpine slide. The kids enjoyed that, although riding the ski lift with a 3 and 4 year old was pretty frightening at first. But they sat still and didn't really move... and even if they wanted to, the kung fu grip and of Mommy and Daddy's hands would have saved them from certain peril!

Holiday High!

My holiday high is kicking in full gear. My head is swimming. I feel all giddy inside. I am in my nothing-can-bring-me-down state of mind! I truly can not believe it is here again! The holidays can be so hectic with small babies. Shuttling them here and there. Carting all of there not-so-essential-but-don't-you-dare-say-I-don't-need-them items around. Watching their every move. Making sure they don't crack their heads on relatives fragile items or trying to keep their tongues off the floor, their little fingers out of every one's food and so on and so on. This year, there is a little more freedom. A little more time to soak in the bliss of it all. A little more time for relaxation and conversation and less of the distracted: "I'm sorry...what were you saying."

My purpose here is less to gush and more to come up to date on some things that have happened in the last couple months:

  • Dylan is doing GREAT on the potty since my last post on this issue. He is still having some accidents here and there, but overall has been amazing! We are now, after 4 great years, completely diaper and pull-up free in our house.
  • Trick-or-treating was a riot! After the witch incident at Cagle's Dairy, Dylan refused to have anything to do with it. As soon as he hit the driveway and saw all the creepy images roaming the streets he freaked! I went back inside with him, started a movie, and gave him a blanket for protection. Every time someone came to the door he made a quick dive underneath! Good thing for sweet big sisters. Maryn came home and gave half her candy to her little brother. She said to me later that night: "You don't have to walk to the door with me next time. I'm not afraid anymore."
  • We have recently toured a kindergarten that we are really hoping Maryn will go to. It was so bittersweet watching her walk around this huge new place. Am I ready for this? I guess I don't have a choice...right?
  • Maryn and Dylan have been practicing guitar. Singing their own original lyrics every night after bath. Totally awesome! I vow to get this on video! Maryn accompanies Dylan's music with her version of the Super Star dance from Saturday Night Live. She is starting to carry her vocals a little longer too which is so sweet and Dylan's rhythm is really amazing.

Now the holidays are on us and we have so much going on, but I would not have it any other way. I am excited to spend time with family and friends and watch the kids soak up time with them that seems so rare sometimes. We will be doing the Stone Mountain Christmas for the first time this year, spending a night in Gatlinburg to see the lights. And, of course, the kids most favorite things are decorating the house, driving the neighborhoods to see all the decorations, and curling up with hot chocolate and watching Polar Express......EVERY NIGHT!!! I LOVE IT!!!

By the way, here are some belated Halloween photos:

Superheros!
Maryn: Dad, you ARE going to carry this, aren't you?!!!
Connor: What? No slackers on my watch!

Maryn: I'm just KIDDING!
Dylan sees ghosts and goblins through the door. He decides not to go trick or treating!
I'm ready to go now!
Grandmama leads them to their first house of the night
Candy corn! We don't want no stinking candy corn! Where's the Snickers?
Not too bad, Dad!
I'm so sad that my brother didn't want to come!

Garfield's Halloween is Really, REALLY Scary... says Dylan

I have "Garfield's Halloween" downloaded and we've watched it the last few Halloweens. It's from the 80's. This year, Dylan does NOT like it. Well, he does, but then he doesn't. There's some parts that really scare him. He also gets really freaked out (see the post that precede's this one) with anything that is the slightest bit ghoulish.

So he grabbed some phone pics of him watching it the other night. He makes faces, covers his mouth, covers his eyes... I have NO CLUE where he gets that from. No clue!!! (definitely not me, not Daddy!)
